About The Village Voice:
Founded by Dan Wolf, Ed Fancher, and Norman Mailer in October 1955, The Village Voice introduced free-form, high-spirited and passionate journalism into the public discourse.
Valentine’s Day is coming up next Tuesday. In case you haven’t figured out what to get for that special person in your life, here’s a succinct listing of gift ideas that you may give to that certain person in your life (or you may gift yourself since it’s delicious and/or useful) for Valentine’s Day.

Chocolate & Baked Goods

S’more Bakery founded by Sarah Warren creates handmade s’mores. It’s a nostalgic treat that is adorable since it’s heart-shaped for this particular holiday. The ones I’ve tried are made of slightly crisp clover-honey graham crackers sandwiched in puffy chocolate, bourbon Madagascar vanilla bean, toasted coconut, and winter spice marshmallows with a smear of dark chocolate ganache.

As any well-made dessert goes (in my book) it’s easy to eat them all in one sitting! The deadline to order her Valentine’s Day s’mores is Saturday, February 11th ($3 to $4 each s’more depending upon the flavors and if there’s customization).

You remember s’mores.

But unless you went to an unusually fussy camp, you probably didn’t spend hours perfecting the crisp of the marshmallow, or choosing the exact chocolate to complement this particular brand of cracker, toiling for hours to produce the perfect specimen of s’more-hood.

The good news is, we know someone who did. And she’s taking orders.

Introducing The S’mores Butler, a one-woman squad cooking up gourmet melted marshmallow in apartments, bars and undisclosed rooftops across our fair city, available now.

Her name: Sarah Warren. Her tools: a tiny butane blowtorch, Callebaut chocolate and homemade marshmallows flavored with anything from vanilla bean to bourbon—which means the whole setup’s small enough to be shoved in a bag at a moment’s notice and brought to wherever s’mores are needed. (She’s working on a Bat-Signal.)

So once you’ve found an appropriate place to throw your next marshmallow party—a Midtown rooftop stocked with hot chocolate and whiskey, for instance—give Sarah a ring and she’ll pop by with all the necessary supplies. (You know, just like your regular butler.)

One of her creations involves bacon graham crackers, chili-dusted chocolate and those bourbon marshmallows we mentioned—but there’s plenty more to work with, including caramelized banana and Grand Marnier–infused ganache. The only limit is your imagination and the whims of local law enforcement.

The ganache squad is nothing to trifle with.

This Saturday, November 19, is the last day to experience Smorgasburg under open skies along the picturesque Williamsburg waterfront before the fest, named Top Artisanal Food Market in America by Bon Appétit, moves indoors to its equally stunning winter location at Skylight One Hanson. This season’s finale market, expected to draw the best of the best artisanal vendors of the year, is the perfect opportunity to place your orders for Thanksgiving, and pick up some less well known specialty products direct from local Brooklyn purveyors that are guaranteed to impress your guests and tantalize their taste buds. Don’t miss it!

I must confess, Smorgasburg quickly became my favorite (not so) guilty pleasure this past summer. I went back for more a total of 4 times, and never ate the same thing twice. The rotating roster of different vendors makes it a unique experience every weekend, and a terrific way to sample a variety of notable, up-and-coming BK eateries, all in one convenient spot.

Once I’ve had my fill, I love to take the East River Ferry back home. You can hop on board right next to the market. It’s a wonderful way to cap off a Saturday afternoon, with a bit of fresh air on the water, and gorgeous sunset views of the Manhattan and Brooklyn waterfronts. For a mere $4, it’s a must!

So, if you’ve still not ventured over to the market yet and want to make a bee line for the best eats on hand this weekend, be sure to check out my personal picks for “The Best of Smorgasburg”:

Honorable mentions to: S’more Bakery for their incredibly ooey-gooey handmade vanilla bean marshmallow, cinnamon clover-honey graham cracker, chocolate ganache S’moregasm; The Good Batch’s array of ice cream sandwiches and whoopie pies on a stroopwafel; and the seasonal fruit popsicle masters, People’s Pops!

Gather ’round the figurative campfire and listen up. This Saturday’s Smorgasburg food flea frenzy is getting its rightful dose of s’more lovin’, and thus, all the s’more reason to go taste test its newest bakery vendor addition. The markedly campy dessert favorite has gotten a much-deserved upgrade from pastry chef Sarah Warren, ringleader and owner of s’more bakery, and now she’s ready to release these perfectly stacked goodies onto a set of hungry Williamsburg-roaming individuals. Make your Halloween weekend extra sweet and indulge — here are five valid reasons why you should beeline to Warren’s artisanal s’more debut at Smorgasburg this weekend.

Childhood nostalgia: Warren says, “These artisanal s’mores elicit a lot of nostalgia, but they’re not exactly like the ones we’ve all had as kids.” You can say that again. Of course, I mean that in the best sense possible. Sometimes there’s nothing sweeter than a trip down memory lane, so why not make it extra sweet with a s’more fest to help you remember your first Girl Scout expedition in the great outdoors?

Pastry chef street cred: Consider s’more bakery Warren’s labor of love that’s been a long time coming. Warren has been baking for most of her life, but she only decided to pursue it professionally after enrolling in a master’s English program. From there, it was culinary school, followed by stints as a pastry extern at Huckleberry Bakery and Cafe in Los Angeles and as a pastry cook at Maialino (2 Lexington Ave., 212-777-2410). That’s real dessert street cred if you ask me.

Inspired by film The Sandlot: The 1993 film is a cult classic, and Warren cites it as one of her favorite childhood movies and a huge reason why she loves s’mores. While drawing that sweet connection, she realized that the almost universally beloved and nostalgic combination of marshmallow and chocolate sandwiched between crisp graham crackers didn’t exist in a more, as she puts it, “carefully crafted” form.

One word: s’moregasm: That’s what’s up for grabs at Smorgasburg this Saturday (and the next three Saturdays to boot). So what exactly is a s’moregasm? Toasted bourbon Madagascar vanilla bean marshmallow, clover honey and cinnamon spiked graham crackers, and semisweet chocolate ganache. Damn.

The photos above didn’t convince you?:
This could be all yours and s’more.
